Landfill Tax went up by another £3 per tonne on 1st April 2006. The tax is now set at £21 per tonne and still has a long way to go before it reaches parity with our partners in Europe where the tax is anywhere between £45 and £65 per tonne.

In addition to the Landfill Tax increase, the 1st April is generally used as the date for landfill operators and collection contractors to review and revise their own operating costs and subsequent charges. The outcome of this is that this year the total cost of waste disposal collections has risen by between 10% and 15%, against an RPI rate of only 3%. If ever there was a time to mitigate costs by compaction and baling then it must be now!
